Financial Services, Latin America
ING Comercial América is a Mexican company and a leader in the insurance, pension benefits and guaranties industry, providing financial services to people who are engaged in developing new projects in Mexico. Recently ING has consolidated its database, providing its employees with real-time availability and easy access to the credit history of its customers. After implementing a UNIXbased SAS® solution in Canada, the company realized that the end-user learning curve was extremely complex. With this knowledge ING Comercial América decided to implement the same SAS system in Mexico, but the new implementation would be based on a standard Microsoft platform. ING chose to do this as ING users are familiar with both interfaces and platform operation, which reduces the end-user learning timeframe by approximately 20%.
The project combined a data warehouse to manage ING´s customer’s credit history with an Intel® Itanium® 2 processor-based solution and Microsoft Windows® operating system. The main requirement was starting with a basic solution, which would scale as the project progressed, beginning with a small database and incrementing it 5 to 10 GB each month. The insurance company started with an HP Integrity Intel Itanium 2- based (4-way) server, with 2 processors and limited disk space, and expanded to a 4 processor Intel Itanium 2- based server, supported by Hewlett Packard´s (HP) internal storage solution.
By adopting an Intel Itanium 2 processor-based platform, ING was able to identify the highest and lowest risk areas and, consequently, it could also determine potential costreduction areas.
Intel Itanium 2-based platforms offered ING high investment protection levels, based on its performance, scalability and availability. This new family of powerful processors extends the corporate open standard-based computing approach, providing greater flexibility, wider alternatives and higher value, compared to the proprietary solutions originally adopted by the insurance company. The resulting direct benefits could be expressed by a 10% to 15% cost reduction in the Actuary Prevision area. Before choosing Intel, ING analyzed a similar UNIX-based platform, but the company concluded that the original server should be changed into an Intel Itanium 2 processor-based server, considering architecture stability and lower operation and maintenance costs.
